This session provided an overview of the policies and politics driving the sustainable finance movement; how Australia stacks up against the rest of the world, and what many locally-based companies are already doing in the absence of a clear policy framework from Canberra.

Speakers

Louise Davidson AM, Chief Executive Officer, ACSI

Louise is the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors (ACSI). ACSI is a collaboration of Australian and international superannuation funds that collectively own on average 10 per cent of every ASX200 company. ACSI’s objective is to improve the environmental, social and governance performance of the companies in which our members invest.

Appointed CEO in April 2015, Louise has more than 20 years senior experience in the financial services and superannuation industry.  She joined ACSI from Cbus, where, as Investment Manager, ESG, she was responsible for the integration of ESG issues within Cbus’ investment processes.

In 2015 Louise was named Victoria’s Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards for her work as the co-founder of the Mother’s Day Classic Walk/Run for Breast Cancer Research.  Established in 1998, this national event has raised over $38m for breast cancer research.  In 2019, Louise was made a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the superannuation and funds management sectors, and to breast cancer research.

Louise is the Chair of the Mother’s Day Classic Foundation and a Director of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.


David Jenkins, Global Head of Sustainable Finance - Corporate & Institutional Banking, NAB

David leads NAB’s Sustainable Finance team and has been active in sustainable debt markets for over 10 years.  He works closely with NAB’s treasury, coverage and capital markets teams servicing customers across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, the UK and USA developing and originating sustainable financing and investment solutions for NAB and its clients. David is an active member of industry bodies including the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative, the ICMA Green Bond & Social Bond Principles Advisory Council and Climate Transition Finance WG, the APLMA Green and Sustainability-linked Loans Committee, Climate Bonds Initiative, the Institute of International Finance (IIF) Sustainable Finance WG and several other sustainability initiatives. David holds an MBA (Finance) from London Business School, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance & Investment and a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil).


Matti Leppälä, Chief Executive Officer, PensionsEurope (BEL) (via video link)

PensionsEurope is the leading voice for funded pensions in Europe representing 24 European national pension fund associations covering over 110 million Europeans and € 5 trillion of assets.  

Matti is a member and was the chair and vice-Chair in 2013-2018 of the Occupational Pensions Stakeholder Group of EU supervisory authority EIOPA, a member of the European Commission’s High Level Group of Experts on Pensions 2018 – 2019 and the chair of the World Pension Alliance 2018 – 2019.

Before joining PensionsEurope in 2011 Matti worked for 11 years for The Finnish Pension Alliance in EU and international affairs, investment policy and legal issues. In 1990’s Matti worked for the Finnish trade unions in collective bargaining, labor law and social policy. In 1986 Matti started his professional career at the Law Drafting Department of the Ministry of Justice in Finland.

Matti has a LLM and an Executive MBA in Insurance and Financial services.


Martijn Wilder AM, Founding Partner, Pollination

Martijn is a world leader in climate law and sustainable investing. With a background in economics and law, Martijn is focused on developing innovative policies, ideas and investments that enable our economies to rapidly transition to net zero, while at the same time preserving our natural ecosystems. Martijn has retained over many years the accolade of the world’s leading climate change lawyer and the Star Individual by Chambers Global Law Guide.

Martijn was head of Baker & Mckenzie’s global climate law and finance practice for 20 years, and was formerly Chair of the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and a founding Director of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. He is currently President of WWF-Australia and Chair of NSW Climate Change Council and the Law for Development Initiative.

Martijn was a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholar and awarded an Australian Honour (AM) for his contribution to climate change law and the environment.

Ali Moore, Journalist and Broadcaster

Ali Moore has more than 30 years experience as a journalist and broadcaster, working for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Australia's Nine Network, and for the BBC's global news network, based in Singapore. She has covered major news and current affairs events across the region, including as the ABC's China Correspondent in Beijing. Ali is a former Vice-Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Melbourne, producing and presenting the 'This is Not A Drill' series of hypotheticals with Asialink, the ABC and the Wheeler Centre. She is now a freelance broadcaster and journalist, and regular program host on ABC Radio Melbourne.
