As trustees and executives are pondering what sort of scale is needed to achieve optimal investment results and what the best way is to oversee insourced investment activities, this session aims to address their queries.

Alistair Barker, Head of Total Portfolio Management, Investments, AustralianSuper

Alistair joined AustralianSuper in 2008 and is a member of the leadership team of the Fund’s Investment Department. He is the Head of Total Portfolio Management. This includes the asset allocation and investment portfolio strategy of the fund’s diversified portfolios, and the oversight of key investment parameters such as return objectives, performance, risk, liquidity and cost.

He has over 20 years of investing experience in funds management, from direct investing through to high-level strategy and asset allocation. Prior to joining AustralianSuper, Alistair was an Investment Director Hastings Funds Management, where he was responsible for portfolio construction, and the execution a range of infrastructure and other private market investments. He also served as a company director on a number of investee companies.

Alistair is a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in the United States. Alistair also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors in both Finance and Actuarial Studies) from the University of Melbourne, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.


Shauna Black, Chair, Media Super Investment Committee

Shauna has been a Trustee Director of Media Super since July 2018.  She is the Chair of Media Super’s Investment Committee and a member of its Disruption Committee and Member Services Committee.

Other current roles include the board of listed company Kangaroo Island Plantation Timbers and executive officer of the Kangaroo Island Business and Brand Alliance. She was previously a director of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance and a Trustee Director of JUST Super. In October, Shauna will fill a casual board vacancy at the Australian Council of Superannuation Investors.

Shauna has a unique geographic perspective as well as a diverse media and business career of more than 35 years.


Jo Townsend, Chief Executive Officer, Funds SA

Jo Townsend was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Funds SA in April 2015. She has extensive investment management experience and is responsible for the daily management of the Corporation.

Ms Townsend has worked in the financial services sector for more than 25 years, starting her career in the investment management sector managing fixed interest portfolios. Through her career, she has held senior executive roles at REST Industry Super, including Acting Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of Investments, with prior roles in the superannuation sector at NGS Super and the Retirement Benefits Fund of Tasmania.

Ms Townsend holds a Bachelor of Mathematics and Finance from the University of Technology, Sydney, and is an IMCA certified investment management analyst. She is a member of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia and the Fund Executives Association Ltd.

Ken Marshman, Chair, Rest

Ken has specialised in financial markets and corporate strategy for over 30 years and has been intensively involved in investments for superannuation funds since 1986.  He held the positions of Director of Finance and CEO within the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, before joining JANA Investment Advisers.  Ken was JANA's Managing Director, and later the Chair of the JANA Board of Directors and the Head of Investment Outcomes.

Ken is Chair of the Board of Rest and Chair of the Board Investment Committee, positions he has held since 2013.
