Berowne Hlavaty has over 20 years of machine learning, big data, quantitative, risk and investment strategy experience. He has consistently ranked top-3 in the Peter Lee surveys in Australia. He regularly engages with industry, regulators and academia contacts through a series of quarterly ‘Quantferences’ giving clients access to the latest research and markets insights. Berowne has a bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering and a master’s degree in Information Science from the University of NSW.


Salim Naim, Chief Technology Officer, Advance Analytics & Data Science, Microsoft

Salim Naim is the Director of AI for Microsoft in Asia where he leads a team of AI/ML specialists helping companies transform their businesses using emerging technology and advanced data science techniques. He is also a guest lecturer for Monash University’s Data Science for Managers and Masters of Data Science program, where he shares real life application and lessons learnt from projects delivered by his team.


Dr. Laura Ryan, Head of Research, Ardea Investment Management

Dr Laura Ryan is Head of Research at Ardea and is responsible for both the Client Solutions and Portfolio Research teams.

The Client Solutions team undertakes independent quantitative research to help clients solve investment problems. The Portfolio Research team is responsible for developing value-added recommendations to drive portfolio performance and improve client outcomes. 

Laura is an internationally published academic with papers appearing in ‘The Journal of Portfolio Management’ and ‘The Journal of Forecasting’, among others.

Previously, Laura was Senior Vice President (Quantitative Research) and a member of the Australian senior management team at PIMCO. With 21 years investment experience, Laura’s other roles include Manager of Quantitative Strategy at Commonwealth Bank, Quantitative Manager at AMP Capital and Lecturer in Statistics at the Australian National University (ANU). 

Laura holds a Ph.D. in statistics from the ANU, a Master of Quantitative Finance from the University of Technology Sydney and an Honours degree in Actuarial Studies from the ANU.

Charles Wu, Chief Investment Officer, State Super (SAS Trustee Corporation)

Mr Wu was appointed CIO in December 2020 and leads State Super's internal Investment team. He is responsible for determining and executing the Fund's investment policies and objectives, determining asset allocation, and implementing and monitoring the Fund's investment arrangements. Mr Wu is acknowledged across the industry for his expertise in the use of machine learning (artificial intelligence) within pension funds and has helped bring State Super to the forefront of this exciting development. Mr Wu joined State Super in 2015 and was previously an Investment Manager at Media Super and an analyst at Mercer. He holds a Master of Commerce and a Bachelor of Computer Engineering and is a Chartered Financial Analyst holder. In 2020 he was appointed President at Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society Sydney.
