Ian Fryer, General Manager, Chant West

Ian has been involved in the superannuation industry for about 25 years. He is an actuary and was Head of Research at Chant West for about 15 years, recently transitioning to General Manager, Chant West. Ian is responsible for coordinating Chant West’s research program for super and pension funds, including analysis of the performance, portfolio structure and governance of their investment offerings. He has also run many tenders for employers to select a default super fund and for asset owners to select an investment consultant, and he conducts detailed quantitative and qualitative benchmarking of super funds. Ian has a strong focus on fee and insurance disclosure and leads an industry-wide group that is helping the industry implement ASIC’s new fee disclosure regime. He has also been involved in a working group that recently produced a proposed model for the consistent treatment of growth/defensive across the industry.

Estelle Liu, Manager - Actuarial Practice, Aware Super

Estelle joined Aware Super as the Actuarial Practice Lead in August 2020. Her area of focuses include data-driven member insights, actuarial advice, members benefit projections, retirement offerings, and fund-wide segmentations.

Prior to that, Estelle was a consultant at Rice Warner and focused on retirement solutions and investment strategies and prior to that at Mine Super.

Estelle is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (FIAA) and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA).

Estelle is currently the convenor of the Actuaries Institute’s Superannuation Projection and Disclosure Sub-committee.


David Haynes, Senior Manager, Policy, AIST

As AIST’s Senior Policy Manager, David has spent the last 10 years working closely with Parliament, Government, Treasury, all regulators and other key stakeholders in developing and implementing all aspects of superannuation policy, including all regulatory changes and major projects such as the Financial Services Royal Commission, default fund selection, and the Insurance in Super Code

David has 30 years’ experience in the industry including time as the CEO of Industry Fund Services and AUSfund, an executive at Members Equity, as an account manager for a major adminstrator, and as a trustee of superannuation funds.

David holds a parallel role as Executive Superannuation Policy Advisor at IQ Group.  He has also been a director of numerous private and public sector board.
