Imagine finding out you had $750,000 in superannuation and didn’t realise. That is part of the magic of the Big Super Day Out, a free Indigenous superannuation event run by First Nations Foundation that is coming to Brisbane next week.
The Big Super Day Out has helped many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people reconnect with their superannuation – including one Aboriginal man that was a postal worker his whole life who was reunited with a life changing $750,000 he didn’t know he had.
After the success in Sydney and Melbourne, it’s time for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to get their free superannuation help at the NAIDOC Family Fun Day on 7 July 2017 in Musgrave Park.
First Nations Foundation CEO Amanda Young announced the themes for Indigenous superannuation are Find it – Grow it – Protect it – Plan it.
“Many Indigenous people are unaware they have superannuation, don’t know where to find it, what their insurance options or what they need to do,” said Ms Young. “The event provides a safe space for First Australians to talk about super with volunteer superannuation professionals.”
Peak body for profit-to-member superannuation, the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) are the principle sponsor of the event for the second year in a row.
AIST CEO Eva Scheerlinck said that the superannuation industry hopes to help reduce the barriers for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people trying to access their super.
“While not everyone will find $750,000, every little bit of super counts so it’s worth coming down and talking to our team of volunteers,” said Ms Scheerlinck. “The Big Super Day Out has been a big success in the past and AIST look forward to contributing again this year.”
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people wanting free superannuation help should bring along their identification and two of the following documents: PAYG Summary, ATO Notice of Assessment, Centrelink payment summary, superannuation statement or their bank account details.
