Sequencing risk and its impact on retirees

The COVID-19 crisis has seen the most significant falls in the share markets since the global financial crisis, and no one knows how long the crisis will last.

As major investors in the financial markets, Australia’s superannuation funds may take years to fully recover from the impact.

For those many years from retirement, this is less of a concern - when markets recover, so will their superannuation account balance. But the outlook is less optimistic for people who have already retired, especially if super is their main or only source of income.

This online training session will examine the concept of sequencing risk and explain how it impacts retirees.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the training session, participants will be able to:

  • Summarise the impact of COVID-19 on investment markets
  • Explain the impact and difference of dollar cost averaging in the accumulation and drawdown phases
  • Describe the impact of sequencing risk on those who are retired
